Formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield, Metallica has become one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands in history, selling 110 million albums worldwide and performing to millions of fans on literally all seven continents. The band has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Museum, as well as winning nine Grammy Awards!
Metallica achieved their success without the help of extensive radio play or advertising. Rather, the band supported their releases, including Kill 'Em All (1983), Master of Puppets (1986), and Justice for All (1988), with a heavy touring schedule and a special relationship with their fans.
Described as the "Led Zeppelin of their generation," Metallica is a model of perseverance. Each member has struggled with various issues and managed to keep the band afloat. Despite tragedies, accidents, disagreements, drug and alcohol abuse, criticism, and sometimes rejection, Metallica never gave up on their dreams. Incidentally, rock legends don't live by their music alone. They even tried their hand at animation. In 2005, the band appeared in full force in the cult animated series The Simpsons, and in 2004, Hetfield and Ulrich voiced two dragon characters in the Disney cartoon Dave the Barbarian.
With their unique sound, powerful live performances, and determination, they are now one of the greatest bands in music history.
